What’s Happening?

As the final pieces of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series lineup fall into place, one driver, Corey LaJoie, who insiders once thought to be a lock for the 2025 season, may be out of a ride. Here’s what you need to know.

Following Zane Smith’s signing with Front Row Motorsports Thursday morning, Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports dropped a bombshell on X. The NASCAR insider claims that he no longer expects Corey LaJoie to be the full-time driver of Rick Ware Racing’s No. 51 next season.

LaJoie finished out the season in the No. 51 after RWR and Spire Motorsports swapped drivers. LaJoie would pilot the 51 following Bristol, and Justin Haley took over LaJoie’s longtime No. 7 ride. This driver swap followed months of speculation, great runs from Haley in the No. 51 and poor runs for LaJoie in the No. 7.

At the time, most assumed that RWR would keep LaJoie in the No. 51 for 2025. However, at the press conference announcing the driver swap, RWR president Robby Benton said nothing is certain about LaJoie being in No. 51 next year. While this didn’t secure LaJoie the ride, most assumed that two cars would field the well-sponsored driver in 2025

The Story Since the Swap

Following the end of the season, insiders kept this tune about LaJoie and his future with the No. 51.  However, RFK Racing’s new No. 60 entry proved that things were changing at RWR for 2025.

RWR entered two cars in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. The first car, the No. 15, was driven by a rotating door of drivers, including Ware’s son Cody. When rumors began in August that RFK Racing would expand in 2025, insiders reported that RFK would lease the Charter from RWR.

Despite this rumor, most expected RWR to stick with LaJoie full-time and an open car in 2025. However, following RFK making their expansion official in November, there has been little noise surrounding LaJoie’s future. Most rumors said that Cody Ware would race in the Cup Series next year, now it seems like it may be Ware driving the No. 51, rather than LaJoie.

While it is still likely that he could find a part-time ride with the team, this new information confirms rumors that LaJoie’s 2025 free agency would be challenging for the veteran driver.
