What’s Happening?

With two laps to go in Sunday’s race in the streets of Chicago, Cody Ware took a hard, head-on collision into the tire barrier. It was a hard impact that drew some criticism for NASCAR as they waited for 45 seconds to throw the yellow flag. This was after SVG took the white flag and was cruising to victory.

  • NASCAR made a number of questionable calls on Sunday. Another questionable call was when Josh Berry wrecked. They waited a full lap, nearly 90 seconds, to throw the caution flag. The Cody Ware incident was another example of a questionable call where NASCAR waited 45 seconds after the crash to display the caution flag.
  • One reason perhaps NASCAR was reluctant to throw the caution flag until SVG took the white was due to the impending weather in the area. The threat of rain had been looming over the event all afternoon. A thick fog was rolling in and lightning had been spotted in the distance.
  • Cody Ware was mild in his criticism. However, he was still surprised by how long it took NASCAR to display the caution flag. Some fans believe that it was a way to ensure SVG the victory without having to deal with a messy restart.

Here’s a look at the sheer speed Ware was carrying as he plowed into the tire barrier.
