What’s Happening?

NASCAR has officially approved Garrett Mitchell, better known by his screen name Cleetus McFarland, to race in Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

  • Mitchell announced his intentions to enter the race last week, though he still needed approval from NASCAR to do so. After testing at Rockingham Speedway last week and this week, NASCAR has approved the 30-year-old for his Truck Series debut.
  • Prior to making his ARCA Menards Series debut last season, Mitchell made his name via his Cleetus McFarland YouTube channel, which has an automotive focus and over four million subscribers, has propelled Mitchell into the NASCAR spotlight anytime he races. With the help of late NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, Cleetus made his way into NASCAR with hopes of racing in the Daytona 500 one day.
  • In this race, which will also mark his NASCAR National Series debut, Mitchell is slated to drive Niece Motorsports’ No. 4 alongside teammates Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Travis Pastrana in a stacked all-star lineup for the team.
  • However, this lineup will have hefty competition in one of the best Truck Series fields in years. The entry list for Friday’s race features over 40 entries, including NASCAR legends and current stars.
  • For example, Spire Motorsports is rolling out former Truck Series standout turned Cup Series star Carson Hocevar and 2021 Daytona 500 champion Michael McDowell. On the other side of the garage, Kaulig Racing debuts its stacked five-truck Ram team, which will field NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart in his return to the sport.
