What’s Happening?

Former NASCAR team owner Chip Ganassi did not rule out a return to NASCAR in a recent report, though it doesn’t seem he’s heading back to the sport anytime soon.

  • Amid rumors that Honda is once again considering joining NASCAR, Matt Weaver of Motorsport.com asked former NASCAR team owner and Honda IndyCar team owner, Chip Ganassi, if he would consider a return to NASCAR if Honda were to enter as a new OEM in the near future.
  • While Gannasi did not express direct interest in returning to the sport, it seems like the legendary owner isn’t ready to entirely shut the door on NASCAR. In response, Gannasi clarified he has not had “those conversations” with NASCAR or Honda, though he says “I am also smart enough to never say never.”
  • Gannasi, then a long-time owner in CART, made his way in August 2000 by purchasing a majority share of Team SABCO. But, after the 2021 season, he sold his charters and shop to Justin Marks’ Trackhouse Racing, returning his focus to his IndyCar Program, where his driver Álex Palou has since won three straight championships.
  • During Chip Ganassi Racing’s 21-season run in NASCAR, the team saw many highs and lows, including winning the 2010 Daytona 500 after a merger with Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. Though he has been out of the sport for several years, his legacy lives on through drivers like Kyle Larson and Ross Chastain.
