What’s Happening?
In a shocking announcement that changes the playoff picture, Alex Bowman has been disqualified from Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval. The No. 48 failed to meet the minimal weight requirement during post-race technical inspection. As a result, Bowman is credited with a 38th-place finish, losing 28 of the 29 points earned, including the Playoff point from winning Stage 2. Bowman will earn only one point following the disqualification.

The penalty has vast ramifications for the Playoff picture. Bowman goes from advancing to the Round of 8 to being knocked out as the first driver eliminated. Joey Logano takes Bowman’s spot in the next round, advancing after initially being eliminated by only a handful of points.
NASCAR stated they tried to give the team a chance to meet the minimum weight requirement, but they couldn’t. This marks the first time in the Playoffs’ history that a driver has been eliminated from a round due to a disqualification. Hendrick Motorsports announced that they will decide on Monday whether to submit an appeal.
