When Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag this past Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, most NASCAR fans figured that this race weekend would open and close with little to no controversy.
Nonetheless, an on-track shoving match both in the car and on pit road between former Trackhouse Racing teammates Ross Chastain and Daniel Suárez quickly became the hottest topic of conversation in NASCAR.
Following a minor on-track incident, for which Suárez has taken the blame, Chastain doored the No. 7 on the cool-down lap, which insinuated a pit road argument and slight shoving between the two.
Though the interaction lasted less than 30 seconds (and though we have no clue what exactly was said between the two), the biggest takeaway was the fact that this argument, featuring two of NASCAR’s most opinionated personalities, did not blossom into a larger brawl on pit road.
Nonetheless, in the days since then, both Suárez and Chastain have commented on the matter and their relationship as a whole.
In his latest Vlog on YouTube, Suárez said that he lost a lot of respect for Chastain following his comments to the Spire Motorsports driver on pit road; on the other hand, Chastain told the media Tuesday afternoon, “We just don’t get along.”

Nonetheless, the cooling of tensions between the two has not topped the conversation about why the potential fight never came to be.
Daniel Suarez Disappointed by Ross Chastain’s “Completely Unacceptable” Comments
What’s Happening? Daniel Suarez had a skirmish with his former teammate Ross Chastain at Las Vegas, where contact on track spilled…
Suarez Lays Out the Stakes
During a Tuesday morning interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Suárez explained why he did not start a fight with his former teammate, the short spirt of shoving between the two.
The former NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion says that while “Daniel from three years ago” would have started a fight with Chastain, he is proud of himself for not escalating their altercation any further.
Even though Suarez chalked this decision up to maturity, he also listed a number of reasons why it was best for him to refrain from going back at Chastain after the shove.
For one, Suárez points out that such action would have cost him $50,000 in fines from NASCAR and caused problems with his sponsors from the resulting media and press coverage of the situation.
“Reason number one, to punch him and to put him on the ground, it was gonna cost me $50,000,” Suarez said. Reason number two, sponsors never like that. Sponsors like exposure, but they don’t like bad media, bad PR.”
However, Suarez claims the third reason why he didn’t fight his former teammate is that Chastain knows it’s not a fair fight, saying it wouldn’t last five seconds:
“Reason number three, I mean, if I want to fight Ross, he knows this, it’s not gonna last 5 seconds. So, what am I going to gain with that?” — Daniel Suarez
While we may never know what a fight between Suarez and Chastain would’ve looked like in real life, many fans this past week pointed out that Suárez has a history of taking down other drivers in a fight, having come to blows with his current teammate, Michael McDowell, in 2019.
Regardless of how Suárez felt at the time, he went on to tell SiriusXM that the incident is behind him, but he still believes Chastain crossed a line during their pit road argument.
“The racing stuff is the racing stuff, and that’s fine, that’s okay. We are going to continue to compete, we’re gonna get to each other again in the future, and it’s gonna be fine,” Suárez said. “The part that, in my opinion, the line that he crossed is the stuff that he said afterwards.”
