Popular NASCAR content creator S1apSh0es traveled down to South Alabama Speedway to check out the Rattler 250, and documented why it was one of the coolest races in America.
The Venue
South Alabama Speedway is a .4 mile banked track located in Kinston, Alabama. The track was built in 1973, and has hosted some incredible events, including the annual Rattler. An interesting fact about the track is that there are not walls in the corner, meaning that cars do sometimes end up in the woods.
The History
Some of NASCAR’s greatest have raced at South Alabama Speedway. As a matter of fact, Neil Bonnet held off Donnie Allison and Red Farmer to win the inaugural event held at the track! The Alabama Gang (Donnie Allison, Bobby Allison, and Red Farmer) would tear up the competition before moving to the NASCAR Cup Series full time.
The Rattler 250
The main event held at South Alabama Speedway is the Rattler 250. A 250 lap feature late model race, with an interesting celebration. The winner must pose in victory lane with a LIVE rattlesnake. Some drivers are afraid to hold the lobster at New Hampshire, imagine having to hold a live rattlesnake! See this photo of 2015 Rattler 250 winner Christopher Bell when he met the snake!
