What’s Happening?

While fans and even drivers give their support to NASCAR changing back to a full-season points system, another supporter of the system has emerged in the form of U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins.

  • Collins, who was sworn into his position on Feb. 5, lobbed his support in a post on his personal X account late Sunday night. In response to the updated standings posted by the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Standings X account, which tracks the points of the NASCAR season under the old system, Collins posted, “Bring. This. Back.”
  • His support for a return to the system, which NASCAR has not used since the 2003 season, followed a week in which individuals such as Chase Elliott joined Hall of Famer Mark Martin’s campaign to return NASCAR’s point system to a ‘traditional’ format. Since the discontinuance of the full-season points system, NASCAR has utilized a post-season system.
  • This system began as the Chase in 2004 and experienced several changes during its initial iteration. However, in 2014, the current system, utilizing brackets, eliminations, and rounds, was introduced, and the moniker ‘The Playoffs’ was taken on in 2016.
  • While some fans have criticized the playoffs since the Chase era, this disgruntlement has grown to a head in recent years. NASCAR introduced a committee earlier this season to suggest changes to the current format. However, NASCAR has yet to announce any changes to the format for the coming season.
