What’s Happening?
At the end of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, there were several questions in the air about the future of NASCAR broadcasting. Now, one of the few questions left is what will happen with former NBC play-by-play voice Rick Allen. So, let’s look at what we know to lay out what Allen could do for next season.
What Happened to Rick?
Since NBC Sports bought a share of the NASCAR Media rights in 2014, Rick Allen has been the voice of NASCAR on NBC for both the Cup and Xfinity Series. When Allen made that switch in 2015, he brought his booming voice from Fox’s Speed Channel to NBC.
As the host of NASCAR on NBC, Allen proved to be a solid fit. To fans, Allen created many memorable moments for throughout his ten seasons. Allen and his analysts, Steve Letarte, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Jeff Burton, were highlights of the NASCAR season.
However, in early 2024, the departure of Earnhardt made it clear that 2024 would be a transitional year for NBC. Furthermore, IndyCar announced it would move to Fox for 2025, shaking up their booth. This led to rumors that Leigh Diffey would be the new voice of NASCAR on NBC. This rumor, once confirmed, meant Allen was out of his long-time role.
What’s Happened Since?
Allen landed on his feet following the official transition at Daytona in August. NBC kept him on as the voice of the NASCAR Xfinity Series for the rest of the season. Furthermore, when the CW took over coverage at Bristol, Allen, Letarte, and Burton stuck together.
Notably, the fall 2024 CW NASCAR broadcasts were almost identical copies of NASCAR on NBC, with similar graphics and broadcast teams. The three stuck together until the end of the season with no word of Allen’s future.
Unfortunately, a post on X on the morning of the season finale suggested this could be the end of the road for Allen, who, in response to a fan, referred to his role in the past tense.
What NASCAR Options Are Left For Allen?
As of right now, no one knows what Rick Allen’s future in NASCAR is or even could be. The cryptic post suggested his time is over. However, there is no other word from Allen related to his career on any social media. So, what are his options should he return to NASCAR?
While it feels unlikely he will, there are two possible routes for him. First, Prime and TNT have coverage of practice and qualifying for almost all races in 2025. If Prime/TNT wanted to do just a booth for P&Q, as there will be a season’s worth of coverage, Allen could be an option. However, they have the flexible group of Steve Letarte, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and former NASCAR on Fox voice Adam Alexander for it’s races and presumably P&Q.
Outside of Prime/TNT, Alexander has not confirmed he is leaving Fox. However, if he were, that might leave a door open at Allen’s old stomping grounds of the Truck Series if Fox wanted to make a change at that level.
Furthermore, there is yet to be an announcement of the NASCAR on CW booth; if the CW was happy with the job he did, that might be Allen’s long-term home, and his future merely lies outside of NBC rather than NASCAR.
Of course, a major problem with both of these jobs is that they are a major step down from the top position at NBC. Accounting for the difference between the two roles and his former job, 2024 might have been Rick Allen’s last season as a NASCAR broadcaster.
We will know for sure when the green flag drops at Daytona in February.
