What’s Happening?

While it may not be the full-time ride some hoped he would get, a new rumor is pointing to Chandler Smith as a potential part-time driver of Richard Childress Racing’s part-time open car.

What’s the Rumor?

The nascarrumornostalgia Instagram account dropped yet another rumor yesterday afternoon, this time involving former JGR driver Chandler Smith. This account has a recent history of quality rumors, most recently with it dropping the news about Bootie Barker leaving the No. 23 prior to its formal announcement.

This latest rumor surrounds RCR’s No. 33 entry. The No. 33 a part-time entry driven most recently by Austin Hill, Ty Dillon, and Will Brown in 2024. While the rumor that the car will enter more races in 2025 was circulating prior to this post, the account now suggests that notable free agent Chandler Smith could be part of the team’s part-time lineup in 2025.

Smith, who had an Xfinity Series championship-caliber season fall short in the Round of Eight, made headlines following the Xfinity Series race at Homestead when he told Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports that he did not have a ride for 2025 and could be working for his dad. Smith departure from Joe Gibbs Racing follows his return to Toyota this season after one season with Kaulig Racing.

While this is the first word that Smith will find work with RCR, it is also the first rumor about where he could land in 2025.

What Is the Likelihood of This Rumor?

It’s important to remember that this rumor is rather low-stakes. It does not say that Smith is going full-time for RCR or that he will have a full-time ride at any level with RCR in 2025. What it does say, however, is that someone has an interest in Smith, which is good, considering his sponsorship situation.

Smith’s lack of sponsorship was one of the only rumors surrounding the driver throughout the second half of the season. In that same interview at Homestead, Smith confirmed these long-rumored sponsorship struggles, alongside limited ride options, were the cause of his free agency.

This arrangement could benefit both parties, giving RCR a chance to test out a proven winner while Smith gets the opportunity to keep his name in the minds of sponsors, fans, and owners. Furthermore, the pairing has low financial stakes as it is not a major commitment, and it gives Smith the opportunity to race in decent equipment at the Cup Series level.

It should be noted though, that the account did say that this is “if he can’t find other opportunities.” Meaning perhaps there are other opportunities out there for Smith. While this is just a rumor, the pieces are there to make sense. If Smith can get sponsorship for a part-time schedule in 2025, this part-time ride could happen for the young yet experienced driver.
