Jenna Fryer of AP Sports reports that T.J. Puchyr, a former co-founder of three-car NASCAR Cup Series team Spire Motorsports, is in agreement to buy the one-car, two-charter-owning Rick Ware Racing. According to the report, RWR will maintain its staff and driver, Ware’s son Cody, in 2026.
According to Puchyr, the team aims to own three Charters by 2027, joining the growing list of teams seeking to own the maximum number of charters.
This is a complex goal for the team, as it seems there could be little to no charters going on the market soon. Of the 36 available NASCAR charters, which grant teams automatic entry into races and increased revenue sharing with NASCAR, most teams are unlikely to sell, aside from 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, which could lose theirs permanently.
The team currently owns two NASCAR Cup Series Charters. They are actively leasing one to RFK Racing and have an agreement to lease their second charter, currently used by No. 51, to RFK for use in the 2026 season.
Lawsuit With Legacy Motor Club
Further complicating the matter is the team’s ongoing lawsuit and countersuit against Legacy Motor Club regarding a charter deal gone awry. LMC sued RWR on Apr. 1, claiming that the team agreed to sell them the charter currently used by LMC, Charter 27, for 2026.
In contrast, RWR claims that they intended to sell LMC Charter 36 for the 2027 season, which RFK will use in 2026. If they win their legal battle, this record-breaking $45 million deal could be off the table entirely.
According to the report from Fryer, Puchyr is not worried about this matter and is “confident” that they will have both charters returned to their ownership by 2027 at the conclusion of their two lease agreements with RFK for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
He also claimed that LMC intended to “humiliate Rick publicly.” Some NASCAR fans shared this sentiment after reviewing the original filing from LMC. On page two of that Apr. 1 filing, LMC claimed, “Strapped for cash, and unable to compete at a Cup Series level by its admission, RWR needed to sell one of its two Charters.”
This is a developing story.
